Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

Canine Good Citizen was introduced long back in 1989 by American Kennel Club aka AKC with an aim to provide a framework of good behavior to the dog parents. The framework has simple criteria that can be easily taught to any dog by the dog parents themself.

Once the furry baby is following these criteria their acceptance increases many fold in a public area. But above all the process of training and learning also improves the communication and bond between the dog and the pet family many folds.

“All dogs can be good dogs, and all owners can be great owners, all it takes is a little bit of training, lots of love, and of course, plenty of praise along the way.”

CGC has 10 objective criteria for evaluation. There is no age or breed restriction for CGC. So the good news is even Indian Pariah can also go through this training along side others.

  1. Appreciate a friendly stranger –
  2. Sitting politely for petting –
  3. Appearance and grooming –
  4. Walking on loose leash –
  5. Walking through a crowd –
  6. Sit and down on command and staying in place –
  7. Coming when called –
  8. Reaction to another dog –
  9. Reaction to distraction –
  10. Supervised separation –

All the dog parents should consider the training process as a fun activity. The CGC training overall shouldn’t take more than 2 months if the dog parents can dedicate 30 mins every day.
